Wisconsin Historical Society Tour! Wednesday 11/16 at 9am

We will plan to meet at 9:00am next Wednesday at the circulation desk in the reading room. The reading room is on the second floor of the Historical Society. It would be great if people had questions ahead of time--if you are able to email them to me, then I can get them to Nancy and Ron ahead of time and they can incorporate them into the tour.

For a little background information: the newspaper collection at WHS is second in volume only to the Library of Congress. WHS collects serials in specific subject areas throughout North America, such as the labor movement; political publications ranging from libertarians, the religious right, to anarchists; genealogy newsletters; military papers; ethnic newspapers and lifestyle magazines; and more! WHS is also unique in that it is the library for the state, and is a government depository, and it's also the official library of the UW Madison History Dept. So there are some distinct user groups and special collecting areas that WHS serves.

SLA DBIO Student Travel Stipend

The Biomedical and Life Sciences Division of SLA will award a travel stipend of $1000 to a library and information science student who wishes to attend the 2011 Annual Conference in Philadelphia, PA in June 2011. Applicants must be or become members of both SLA and its Biomedical and Life Sciences Division (DBIO) and, if awarded the stipend, must agree to serve on a DBIO committee for one year. The stipend will be presented to the student at the business meeting of DBIO at the conference.

Nominations for the stipends should include contact information for the nominee, a brief statement about his or her interest in and potential for serving SLA and/or the Biomedical and Life Sciences Division, and interest in pursuing a career as an information professional in the subject field of Biomedical or Life Sciences. Self-nominations will be accepted.

Nominations must be received via email or regular mail at the address below no later than 5:00pm EDT on Friday, April 22. A winner will be notified by Friday, April 29.

Summer Course & Leadership Opportunities

The summer course Corporate and Special Information Services (3 cr.)
is being taught by Ron Larson. It allows you the opportunity to learn
about different types of special and corporate libraries and the roles
their evolving roles in today's information world. Ron is a well
connected professional in the field and the course allows students to
take field trips to various special libraries and speak with an array
of experienced professional librarians. If you enroll in this class,
you will also become a member of the national SLA (Special Library
Association) Chapter.

Also, the SLA student chapter at UW-Madison is currently recruiting leaders
for next year. If you are motivated to work with students who are
interested in special libraries, would like to learn more about them,
or would like to help create events and lead a student committee, this

SLA's Environment & Resource Management Division Student Award

SLA's Environment & Resource Management Division Student Award Deadline is extended to May 1, 2011

The ERMD Student Award recognizes a student who is especially interested in pursuing a career as an information professional dealing with environment and resource management issues. The award is $500.00, plus a $750 reimbursement award if the student comes to the SLA annual meeting in Philadelphia. The student must be enrolled in an ALA accredited master's degree program. This award is meant to promote both current and future involvement in and commitment to the library and information science profession prior to, during, and after the master's program.

To be considered for the award, a student must be an SLA member and write a 300-500 word essay describing his or her interest in the issues facing information professionals in the environment and natural resources fields. Essays should be labeled with the student's name, contact information, and educational institution. Deadline for receiving submissions is May 1, 2011. The award will be presented at the SLA Annual Conference in June. The winner is encouraged, but not required, to attend the annual conference.

SLA 2011 Student Stipend Award

Student Stipend Award
The Petroleum & Energy Resources (PER) Division, SLA, is offering a Student Stipend Award to help cover expenses at the 2011 SLA annual Conference in Philadelphia.

The Stipend includes $1,000 plus student registration to the conference plus complimentary entrance to any PER ticketed events.

The conference theme is a question, "Are You Future Ready?"

Eligibility
All Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited graduate level library or information science program and be interested in a career in petroleum or energy librarianship. The 2011 SLA Annual Conference in Philadelphia, PA must be the first SLA conference attended.

Applicants must be members of SLA by March 15, 2011 to be eligible. Students can access an SLA Membership Application form at: http://tinyurl.com/2hfra4 and mail it to the address indicated on that form. The cost is $40 for student membership.

The recipient may not accept a travel award for the 2011 SLA Annual Conference from any other SLA Division or Chapter.

Application Procedures
Prepare a written statement of approximately 500 words on the following topic: "I am future ready and ready for what is next because..."

Essays should not include what you will do at the Conference. Rather, the essay must incorporate the conference theme and demonstrate the anticipated benefits.

February 22nd, 2011 is Library Legislative Day, free for library school students. Considering the new composition of the Wisconsin State Legislature, there needs to be an especially strong turnout at this rally to send a clear message to the Governor and legislators that libraries are crucial to Wisconsin's economy (i.e. businesses and job creation). If you are unable to attend, you can take part in the Virtual Library legislative day by e-mailing, calling, or writing your legislator on February 22nd.

This is an state advocacy event on library issues that is held annually in Madison. State funding is a crucial component for all library types in Wisconsin (academic, public, school, etc.) and is therefore crucial for Wisconsin citizens and our livelihood. Even if you don't stay in Wisconsin, this is an instructive experience for whatever state or library type you end up with. Here is a breakout of how this affects our library school program and library types:

About 20% of the budget for public universities and their libraries comes from state revenue.
This affects the UW SLIS program through the allocation (or lack thereof) for faculty members.
Public libraries depend on state funding to support public library systems.
School libraries depend on state funding through the Common School fund.
All of these libraries utilize:
Badgerlink (i.e. state-licensed databases paid through the State Universal Service Fund)
Library Service Contracts (Wisconsin Talking Book and Braille Library, Wisconsin Library Services (WiLS), Milwaukee Public Library/ Interlibrary Loan (MPL), and Cooperative Children's Book Center (Assists with intellectual freedom))
Newline for the Blind
Broadband
Statewide delivery

WLA Annual Conference: Create Adventure

The Wisconsin Library Association's annual conference began yesterday at Kalahari in Wisconsin Dells. The theme of this year's conference is "Create Adventure." The conference will run through Friday at noon, and offers many interesting sessions for attendees. A full schedule is available on the WLA Conference website. The book cart drill team from SLIS will be competing.

This year's conference will also feature a special focus on technology, including web 2.0, geocoding and social networking. WLA's blog features a post detailing the related sessions.

WLA is sponsoring a food drive for the Wisconsin Dells-Lake Delton Community Food Pantry. Non-perishables will be collected for the duration of the conference near the registration desk.

LM2, a free social event, will take place on Thursday, Thursday,

Make Suggestions for the Class Gift

There is a box in the SLIS Library for suggestions on what the graduating SLISers should get for the class gift. Once we get some ideas together we will get a few top good ones, and then see what we can afford after a collection. Past class gifts have been: extension cords for the library, board games for the commons, and the microwave in the kitchen area. Here is the official announcement.

Traditionally, each SLIS graduating class dedicates a gift to UW Madison SLIS. The purpose of this is to thank those that came before them for their contributions. Additionally, it shows that the graduating class appreciates the education and experiences they have gained and desire to give back to their alma mater.

Since this is a gift from the class, it is only fair that everyone gets a chance to voice their suggestions as to what the gift will be. To that end, a suggestion box has been placed in the SLIS library. Please add your suggestion(s) to this box so that your voice will be heard. This box will remain in the library until Wednesday March 3rd. These suggestions will then be put into a survey which will be sent out to the listserv for final vote.

Library Legislative Day--Tuesday, Feb 16

A bit of short notice, but please let me take this opportunity to promote participation in Wisconsin's Library Legislative Day. This is an activity open to SLIS students where they attend a breakfast/information session to listen to presentations and learn talking points on current issues with libraries in our states. The students then shadow librarians from all over Wisconsin as they visit various state Congressmen and aides at the Capital and advocate for library issues.

Registration is still open and I urge anyone interested to go to the WLA's information page on this event.

I have included a synopsis of my experience at the event from last year below:

I started off the day by waking up earlier than I had all year in order to make the 7:30 am registration. I found the Green Bay group (I was put with them because it is my hometown) easily. My high school principal was there, so it was pretty easy to spot. That came as a surprise. There were also a few librarians from UWGB and the director of the Brown County Library, Lynn Stainbrook. I had heard the news about Green Bay that she was hired in part because she is a fund-raising ace, and it was wonderful to watch her in action. You bet I took notes!
We started off in a reception room with carbs and the promised free coffee. A couple people talked about the major issues at hand and led us through the literature in our packet. One phrase I heard repeated a few times was “The new increase is no cuts.” Libraries aren’t exactly a hard sell. In times of economic troubles usage statistics go up. More people take advantage of FREE books, cds, and dvds, and the library is pretty much the only place many people can get internet access. Most anything job related is online now. However, even though Wisconsin libraries return $4 for every dollar spent, with a budget deficit it is sometimes easier to see the benefits of investing in roads and public safety.

We didn’t actually visit the legislators themselves, but their aides, which is fine because the aides we visited specialized in libraries and education and such. There was a lot of emphasis on networking and establishing contacts. I was really impressed to see Ms. Stainbrook make an appointment for one of the state legislators to come take a tour of the library and talk about a possible project in the future. Like I said, it was a fantastic learning experience, and it made me glad I was at Madison so I had the chance to go to it.

SLA Name Change Voting Now Open

If you are a paid member of the SLA, then you should have gotten an email sometime late last night telling you that voting for the name change was open. After an initial glitch, there was a second email sent out with dircections on how to vote in the official ballot. The purpose of the vote is to decide on whether or not to change the association's name to the Association for Strategic Knowledge Professionals.

Below are the instructions for voting as given in the email.

The November 4th meeting will be a joint meeting with the ALA SC and will be held in the SLIS Commons from 12:30p to 1p. SLA topics will include:

SLA CEO visit--Janice Lachance, CEO of the SLA, former director of federal government agencies, with a JD certified to practice law in two states and before the Supreme Court will be coming to SLIS on November 9 to speak and have a Q and A section. Pizza and dessert will be provided.
Fall Tour--The fall tour will be held On Thursday, November 19 from 1-2 pm at the Schwerdtfeger Library. The library is housed in the Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences Building. The tour was previously going to be at the Textiles Library, but there were complications involved with their recent move to a new location.
Leadership opportunities. There are now leadership opportunities available for interested first years.
Spring events. The floor will be open to any ideas for spring programming.

What's in a Name?: SLA Considering Name Change

There has been an effort in recent years to change the name of the Special Libraries Association. The concept of special libraries is considered to be confusing by some, and others feel that the term librarian is limiting in the technical and business sphere. A few years ago there was a vote to change the name, but it was voted down. Another drive is being made to change the name to the Association for Strategic Knowledge Professionals or ASKPro. As seen in the SLIS Listserv there is a fellowship opportunity in the area available. Applications are due Feb 5:

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is accepting applications for its Associate Fellowship program, a one-year training program for recent MLS graduates and librarians early in their career.
In the first half of the year, a formal curriculum offers exposure to library operations, research and development, intramural and extramural research, development and lifecycle of NLM's web-based products and services and the extensive outreach and education program reaching consumers, special populations, health professionals and librarians. In the second half of the year, Associate Fellows have the opportunity to choose projects based on real-world problems proposed by library divisions and work with librarians and library staff over a six-seven month period. Successful projects have led to peer-review publications and to services that have become a regular part of library operations.
The September through August program also offers professional development and an introduction to the wider world of health sciences librarianship that may include:

* Supported attendance at national professional conferences, often
including the Medical Library Association's annual meeting, the
American Medical Informatics Association annual meeting and others
* Spring Practicum at a health sciences library in the contiguous
United States
* Additional brown bags, seminars, field trips and learning
opportunities available on the National Institutes of Health campus
* Opportunities to meet and interact with senior management at the
National Library of Medicine
* Experienced preceptors from National Library of Medicine staff
* Potential to compete for a second year fellowship at a health
sciences library in the United States

The Fellowship offers:

* A stipend equivalent to a U.S. Civil Service salary at the GS-9
level ($50,408 in 2009)
* Additional financial support for the purchase of health insurance
* Some relocation funding
* Assistance in finding housing

Who is eligible?
All U.S. and Canadian citizens who will have earned a MLS or equivalent degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited school by August 2010. Both recent graduates and librarians early in their career are welcome to apply. Priority is given to U.S. citizens.

There is a meeting this Wednesday September 30th at 12pm in the SLIS Commons to organize a team for the Book Cart drill competition for the WLA Conference.

This event is on Friday October 23, 10:30-12pm and is the 2nd Annual event. The conference is held in Appleton this year, and team members would only have to attend for the performance which is that Friday. If you are not sure what this exactly entails, search "book cart drill team" on youtube for some fun videos.

The reasoning behind the increase is explained here. Any students interested in applying for membership to the SLA can access the most recent form here. Membership in the SLA is not required to be a member of the SLA-SC, but there are many benefits that come with membership of the national association. These can be explored on their website.

After discussion with our faculty supervisor we were able to narrow down the list of campus libraries for our fall tour to: Business Library, Ebling Library, Forest Products Lab Library, Herbarium Library, Law Library, Mills Music Library, Ruth Ketterer Harris Library (Textiles and Design), Schwerdtfeger Library (Space Science and Engineering Center), and Wisconsin Water Library. The 2009 Wisconsin Library Association Annual Conference is quickly approaching. Join your colleagues to “Reclaim the Magic” at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel, in Appleton, October 20-23 and help out by volunteering your time. Volunteers play a vital role at every WLA Conference and contribute to its success, so please consider donating a few hours of your time in Appleton.
The Conference Committee is seeking volunteers for the registration desk. Shifts will be kept short, no more than two hours, so that you won’t miss out on many of the exciting programs. If you enjoy catching up with friends and meeting new people, registration is the place for you!
Registration is open on Tuesday, October 20 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.; on Wednesday, October 21 and Thursday, October 22 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and on Friday, October 23 from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.

SLA-SC Co-Sponsoring September Career Events

The SLA-SC will be co-sponsoring two career events put on by SLIS this fall:

Advice from Early-Career LIS Professionals (Panel and Discussion) on Tuesday, September 15 from 4:45 to 6:15 in the SLIS Commons. A panel of recent graduates will talk about their experiences working in academic libraries, archives, digital collections, public libraries, school libraries, special libraries and youth services. Discussion groups follow the panel. Pizza will be served.

Writing Resumes and Cover Letters for LIS Professions on Thursday, September 24 from 11:45 to 1:00 in the SLIS Commons. Speakers include John Pollitz, Director of Libraries at UW-Eau Claire; Brad Hughes, Director of UW-Madison's Writing Center; and a recent graduate TBA. Sample resumes and cover letters from recent SLIS graduates (who found jobs!) will be provided.

I went to both of these events last year. The Advice from Early Career-Professionals gives great advice on how to prepare for and conduct your job search. The Writing Resumes and Cover Letters gives out very good writing tips from people involved in hiring and those who were successful in their job searches. I recommend bringing along a resume and cover letter of your own so that you can take notes. After the resume workshop I completely rewrote mine!

The SLA-SC plans on sponsoring other SLIS events this year and will advertise them here as they arise. The SLIS events calendar can be found here.

Orientation News and Student Outreach Night

I contacted Doug Mullin who came to some of the SLA-SC events last year and asked him if there were any handouts I could use at the orientation. He got me in contact with the woman who handles membership at headquarters (HQ!) and she sent me the two .pdf's that are in the previous post. The first is a membership brochure and the second is the SLA application form. There is no charge to be in the student chapter, but there is a formal application if you want to be a member of the SLA.

Doug also got me connected with Kyle Naff, who is the co-chair elect for the Wisconsin Chapter. He believes he will be able to come to the orientation, and is also interested in doing a student outreach night in October or November. Andrea Poehling is getting in touch with him to work out those details, and if the event happens then the SLA-SC will probably sponsor it. Please send in any suggestions for topics you would like to discuse with Mr. Naff. Ideas so far have included public speaking and how to best utilize that first job once you've gotten your MLIS.

After making the last blog post I was thinking about the different ways that you can choose to follow the blog. Many of you may have Bloglines, Google Reader, or something along those lines. Should the Madison SLA-SC have a profile on Twitter and tweet whenever we update the blog?

Also, I made the blog searchable in order to make it more accessible. Because of this I changed the settings for the comments so that they are moderated (in order to limit spam). Let me know if anyone thinks the settings should be changed back.

Just found out that the SLIS orientation is on September 1st. The SLA-SC will have a booth at the org and is soliciting ideas. Some of the ones we have now are:

Also, we are thinking about doing something after the event in cooperation with the ALA-SC like maybe a pub crawl. It's difficult because the first day of classes is the day after, but it could be doable if it starts at 5ish or something. This is only in the hypothesizing phase right now, so input would be greatly appreciated. Would it be something you would want to go to? Maybe a last summer hurrah?
